Romantic gestures: Guys:

First up get her flowers ….Duh! But no – not roses or things that will die a horrible shriveled death too soon (Yes, much like your relationship if you blow this).

Get creative. If you are doing a surprise for Valentines day, go all out and buy Orchids. Send them to her office where she can keep them for at least 3-4 weeks. Her fellow co-workers will stare back in envy as they carefully envelope keep-sake dried red rose petals after a week.

One buddy of mine sent his beloved tulips, having them delivered to her office and had a meal ready for her that night with one single stemmed rose. Then he presented her with the romantic getaway over their candlelit dinner at home. It was not her birthday, not an anniversary and not an apology or Valentines day. It was simply a massive gesture of love and appreciation.

How did she react? At first, according to him, she was in tears of emotion and gratitude which soon transformed to suspicion. “What have you done?” she asked. “What do you have to tell me?”

Now this can be the tricky bit. You need to time any gestures like these in isolation of any unresolved hangover arguments that were about guilt, blame or suspicion. If the issues are trust, this can be a well meaning gesture that will blow up in your face. Who said romance with travel would be simple?

Practice caution when you act out of character

Also, if you are not prone to any demonstrative acts of love in the past, this method may be over the top. Guaranteed it will ensure a guarded suspicion from your partner. In that case, I would suggest start small and be consistent before you present the big gesture of love such as a romantic getaway.

 A romantic getaway as a surprise is an amazing way of saying “I love you”. Of course, you need to know her future plans and what social, family or business demands she may have.. You also want to be sure that this would be something she would really want and enjoy. Nothing worse than giving a present that has the same reaction as if you had just gift wrapped her a new vacuum cleaner or cooker.

Find nice romantic places to go where nuptial recreation of any variety can be memorably celebrated. Look for a place where spa treatments are available or any type of body pampering. Now, very important! Do not, for one solitary minute think a spa treatment at your destination means you get time off. This is not the time to watch a game on TV or play some golf. This needs to be a couple’s thing.

Where to go?

Obviously budget and time will dictate where you can go and what is available at this late stage. But here’s the thing. If you do this with some style and panache, you could take her to Detroit, Michigan. Ok, maybe that’s a stretch. Then again, maybe not – take a look at The Dearborn Inn, built in 1931. Very colonial and swanky. And if you both have a valid passport  you can drive up to Windsor, Ontario in Canada for some good times at their casinos and be a part of some nightlife.
Whatever you decide,  you can really add some brownie points if you look like you put some thought into how you present this.

Warning: 

Don’t just blindly buy some vacation package, print out the e-tickets and itinerary and stuff them into the card. Nope, here’s where you get 007 stylish. You go find a great travel bag. Maybe a good quality ladies travel tote that you know she would like. Or go with a garment or shoes that you know she has been eyeing for awhile. Just think of something that spells class and thoughtfulness.

Now, put the tickets and details in the card and the envelope on the bag or other apparel. Then get one long stem rose (if you didn’t use it for the dinner date) and place it atop the envelope and the bag.
