Can you imagine taking in a vista so beautiful that it describes everything you read about the English countryside? This would be the Lake District

The Lake District in Cumbria, host to England’s highest mountains and lush valleys, the heather moorlands and the coast. 16 lakes await exploration in a place that has inspired great poets and writes through the ages.

The Lake are is located in Cumbria,  the northwestern part of England. Proclaimed a World Heritage Site, this is a place visitors  can spend time exploring its lakes, mountains and forests. The Lake District National Park, United Kingdom is part of this area and offers some truly breathtaking scenery.

However, eye-candy is not the only feature of this region. There is so much to see and do. The area has a  contemporary cultural community, a rich heritage to learn about and an increasingly expanding  reputation as a foodies destination for fine food and drink.

This wondrous landscape that was the source of inspiration for the likes of Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter, is today, a mecca to the latest generation of creative inhabitants – with writers, musicians and artists. For the artsy folk, the poetry programs, fine sculpture trails, street art and theatre all offer good reason to visit Cumbria and the Lake District.

With a myriad of different pursuits and attractions to take part in. The 16 lakes in the district offer plenty of opportunities for water recreation. People who enjoy boating can hire canoes or kayaks to use in some of the lakes. Sailboats are permitted in a few of the Lake District UK lakes.

Those who want to actually get into the water can swim and dive in most of the lakes in the area. 

Visitors can fish for salmon or trout in Lake District UK rivers. Pike can be caught in the biggest lakes in the district.

The district has paths around the lakes for those who enjoy leisurely walks. People who prefer more strenuous exercise can climb mountains. Cyclists can ride on country roads. There are trails for beginners and experienced mountain bikers in Whinlatter Forest.

Visitors who want to relax while they admire the scenery can take a seven-mile train ride through the hills.

Families who are visiting the Lake District will enjoy spending a day at Brockhole at The Lake District Visitor Center. Riding ponies, playing miniature golf and swinging through the trees are some of the things children can do here. Boats and bikes are available for hire.

Things to do in the Lake District

  • The World of Beatrix Potter – Bowness-on-Windermere
  • The Lakes Aquarium in Lakeside is another great place for a family outing. Visitors can see British sharks, a lobster, puffer fish and tortoises here.
  • History lovers will find plenty of attractions here. There are rock carvings more than 6,000 years old in the central part of the district. Visitors can see ruins of Roman forts from the second century near Ravenglass in the western part of the Lake District and near Ambleside in the southeastern part of the district.
  • The Duddon Iron Furnace near Broughton-in-Furness was built in the 18th century. Parts of Muncaster Castle near Ravenglass were also built in the 18th century.
  • History lovers and art lovers will enjoy visiting Abbot Hall in Kendal. This mansion was built in 1759, and it is now an art gallery.
